The French Connection - Septiéme (7th) Note ... oo la la Maison et Objét, where to begin?

Rebonjour à tous! I am very sorry to be tardy with this week's edition but have been suffering from amazing décor overload as well as struggling to get photos downloaded and thoughts organized.

The salon seemed even more enormous than usual, and I was a little overwhelmed even before entering ... these huge signs greeted us with loud bursts of color!

Well, first off, first impressions ... the theme as I would describe it is 2012 Get Happy! (emphasized with this year's Pantone color of the year TANGERINE tango!) now I know Maison et Objet has its own theme, logo, etc. but in general everyone seemed to be trying their hardest to inject some fun and whimsy into their offerings.

I saw lots of bright, juicy colors. Punchy primary colors are in in in...!

Whimsy! Lots of quirky little accessories to brighten up a space affordably. Humorous touches. Upbeat vendors.

Another trend was, of course, the ever expanding green market. upcycled, recycled, reimagined, transformed materials.

Artisanal everywhere. Locally-made in big demand and emphasized greatly. If something wasn't hand made, it was still created to look like it was.

Lighting ... seems like there was alot more lighting on display! trying lift our spirits, maybe?

A whole building devoted to Ethnic Chic with lots of interesting ideas and presentations ...

An inspiring expo of the Ateliers d'Art of France with young designers strutting their stuff...

Really, the whole show was phenomenal and, because it is a truly international affair, I can definitely say the whole world is feeling a bit in need of a mood change... and designers everywhere are doing their best to encourage, inspire and uplift starting with our home environments!

I am going to share photos for the next few columns so you can see more about these themes I've mentioned.

Since Johnelle and I adore color so much, maybe I will start there!

The French Connection ... Sixième Note- à la brocante

Brocantes are many things. part antique store, part thrift shop, part junk and salvage. Always a little part heavenly! for me, they are made all the more interesting because it is all old FRENCH stuff and somehow all the more intriguing. Sometimes that may be because a lot of what you find will be naturally older ... because folks have been around a lot longer in these parts so even their old crap is more interesting ... ha!

While I have been up here in northern France, between Soissons and Reims ... I haven't spent too much time yet sniffing out the good spots.

However I have regularly passed a pair of shops and been curious, so today I dashed by one and have some photos to share with you, my fellow armchair "chineurs" (loosely translated, to chiner or shee-nay, you are scouting or thrifting or antique hunting or somesuch, in a brocante or at a vide-grenier / flea market).

So this one is not very creatively named Antiquités et Brocante du Laonnais. The owner lives there, his house is attached to a big garage/warehouse for his store and it is located on a very organized, neat as a pin property.

Here are some highlights ...

Before we head inside, here were a few treasures arranged in the courtyard ... next to functional items like cords and cords of firewood !

This is a really lovely gate in good condition for its age ... likely 20s or 30s ... not too much rust and the lock functioned too.

This gorgeous window (well, mostly frame now)

There were four to six of these out and about, in varying degrees of decay. I have fun just imagining the chateau or manor that these graced in their better years.

These are amazing architectural pieces, salvage to be sure, but I could go crazy picturing the various design possibilities even one of these could afford.

Hey look, he loves chairs too! and I got a few inspirations for The Bohemians as well ...

this also made me think that if you have a single chair that you adore ... not too heavy, maybe even kind of fragile ... why not think about putting it up as wall art?

I might try that, so there!

Heading inside, I soon discovered it was a little more antiques than thrift, with lots of huge old wooden furniture items like ancient armoires, bureaus, kitchen cabinets of old ... many beautiful big things and a lesser selection of 'smalls' ...

but these were some wonderful candelabra and the clock wasn't so bad either!

This armoire was ENORMOUS and I loved the women's faces carved on each door ... do you?

A beautiful sideboard, the wood and carved details were a beautiful honey brown ...and of course there were SOME goodies throughout , but not as 'sanford and son' as some of the shops you find:

these little gals caught my eye ... especially the one in the green dress ...

a serene art deco plaster sculpture ...

chairs more chairs, and a collection of old cast iron irons ....

heading back outside a few things I missed on the way in ... a cool old buffet with a birdy theme, and a collection of old pitchers ... some in zinc, some enamel.

and this group of funky old wood or coal stoves, how did I miss those on the way in??

Finally though, one of my most favorite discoveries and one I will probably be going back to bargain for were these ..

a ginormous pile of old floor tiles ... and there was another one, smaller, but all from one cool old floor ... I dream of putting a whole floor of these in, possible a bath or sunroom ... I actually think it would be even more fun to have a whole room floor with mismatched but unique tiles ... that requires a chunk of time for sorting and reflecting, which I didn't have today.

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Chocolat

This week's Salvaged Chic Of The Week is such a sweet piece; it's nutty brown color and feminine shape make it perfect for a multitude of spaces.

I love the curves of "Chocolat" and its warm hue, which makes it the perfect neutral piece with personality!

French Chic ... it would look gorgeous among other similarly styled silhouettes , or as that unexpected pop in a modern setting.

Can't you imagine 'Chocolat' it nestled among these spaces?

I could also see her being perfect in a bathroom as well... not taking up too much room, but to still offer a good amount of storage.

The French Connection - Cinquième (Fifth) Note: Trendy furniture à la française!

Okay when I saw the name of this design group, I couldn't stop thinking of the reprise from one of my other trendy french favorites ... singer Inna Modja and her popular song "French Cancan" ♫ Coco Choco Chanel Coco, Coco Choco Chanel and Chocolat ...♫ but anyway I digress ... from this music to another music to my ears ...

Cocotte Metal, Immobilier Chick and Smart is a design group with a very cool concept! Their trendy site presents all sorts of flashy and flirty metal furniture pieces in all shapes, sizes and colors ... designed by You (the consumer).

After visiting and checking out all sorts of inspiring examples ... you can select the elements you would like (for example table base and top in a variety of shapes and sizes) mix and match (or not) as you can dream it up ... pick your colors ... and your piece will be put together to your specifications and delivered to you. There are tables, shelving units and consoles to choose from.

Ever inspired by the energy and creativity of my daughter and the young women designers of the bay area that I have met through her ... imagine how fun it was to learn that the designers of these fun pieces and concept are two young European WOMEN, Anna from Barcelona and Clémence from Paris. They met in design school (l'ESAG Penninghen, School of interior design and architecture) . After five years in school together, they decided to partner and launched their studio "Twin Truc".

Their first project was with a metalworking company, they were able to participate in making their first prototypes. This experience was where they knew they wanted to continue to create furniture in parallel with craftsmen.

In September 2010, they connected with fabricators Marie and Arnaud of les ateliers de DVAI, in order to create a range of objects. Together, they visited the workshop to see firsthand their manufacturing techniques: laser cutting, bending, rolling, bending, machining and welding of sheet steel.   They were immediately drawn to the same vision: pre-cut pieces of furniture in a flat aluminum sheet, like a sewing pattern.  These pieces were destined to be "folded" into forms that fit together like a puzzle....

The concept was born: a range of furniture that comes flat, using self-assembly without nails or screws, for a simple system of fold and nesting.

Voila!! hip, flashy and functional ... designed in France, made in France, et malheuresement (and sadly), you have to live in France to have them, at least for now.

But take a gander and be inspired to support a local young artisan in your neck of the woods.  These gals have created a small enterprise that employs 20 folks with pride!!

Small businesses need and deserve our support and encouragement so visit one near you today!  Mignonne Décor for example ... !!

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Witney Hudson Bay Camp Couch

I want this piece desperately, luckily for you I can't snag this week's amazing Salvaged Chic Of The Week because I live in a shoebox (you know, not literally) with walls that threaten to burst with many a Mignonne treasure!

This week's piece is this gorgeous reupholstered vintage couch, "Witney", revamped with an amazing vintage, Hudson Bay Blanket circa 1940's, with a plush down stuffed center cushion.

I love this piece so much, and as an admitted obsessor of details it's little things like Witney's herringbone band, petite corduroy piping, grey denim and original patches from the red blanket that's the focal point of this piece.

Johnelle made sure both of the original patches from the blanket (which were packed with character) were sewn onto the couch as a great way to see the life this piece has had before.

Did I mention these AMAZING pillows are included with this piece?! I love that they're on point with a trend right now, but they're also classic vintage navajo/kilim textiles & pillows are the perfect part of a couch to display something more current because you can change them seasonally, bring them to another room, and bring them back again whenever you please! The back of the couch even has a hand sewn patch of the kilim worked into the mix.

This piece is inspired by the original Witney Point blanket and Johnelle's designs were born from that central piece, and the rest followed. As we've said before, fashion and design are intertwined and you can see how this look is shining now in fashion as well.

Just like fashion, Witney would look great as the pop piece in your home nestled next to a newer couch (you could even use Whitney's pillows on your other couch to tie the both together, or have Johnelle make you another set!) or as a stand alone piece. Because of the brilliant way Johnelle designed the fabric pieces for Witney, this couch is a piece that can be pulled away from a wall (if you choose) because it's gorgeous and detail packed from every angle!

Come into the shop to gape at this gorgeous piece in person, you know you want to snuggle up against that soft blanket backing!

The French Connection ... Quatrième (fourth) Note! glassware.

In addition to furniture ... Mignonne Décor is known for our love of vintage glassware. We have a universal love affair with glasses of all shapes, sizes and background, no matter how questionable.

At Mignonne, we continuously seek glasses to offer in the shop. When we find something marked 'made in France', we are even more delighted to share them with you. And of course, on each and every visit to France ... the search is on for the best treasures to bring home for our clients!

One well known French brand is Luminarc. Arc International (owner of the Luminarc brand) was founded in 1825 with the manufacture of demi johns or dame jeannes, storage containers for french housewives (pictured right).

The company was purchased by the Durand family in 1926, after having a major influence in the enterprise for many years. Luminarc was launched in 1948 and benefits from many of the techniques adopted by the Arc brand like the construction of modern glass presses (1947) and the use of automatic blowing machines (1950).

Another of Arc's signature glasses are the thick-walled ten-sided "working glasses" that were oh so popular in French kitchens after their introduction in 1978.

You might recognize their shape from a delicious jam vendor you find in your local market, "Bonne Maman".

We are usually MOST excited when we discover some vintage Luminarc glasses in one of their classic vivid colors like deep ruby red ... you've seen some like these before at Mignonne:

Luminarc is still going strong, creating designs that will become tomorrow's vintage pleasures.  In addition to glasses, all sorts of tabletop designs for plates, serving dishes, aperitif accessories are available.

Somehow, I still prefer the delight of finding a vintage piece from the past ... imagining its history and durability and the pleasure it will provide gracing a modern day table.

The French Connection ... Troisième Note! Grey, The New Neutral.

Grey has been a much maligned color in design schemes. In America, it can be considered somber, the color of ciment, a bit sad even... for me even prison-like!

Since moving to France, I have a whole new regard for the color grey. I am surrounded by all sorts of inspiring examples of grey which are so much more beautiful than those I remember in the U.S.

Here wherever you look you find a shade of grey.

Check out the beautiful cupola roof slates here ... not only is the color sharp, but the shape of these rooflines inspire me in all sorts of design directions ... just a typical corner of Reims, with the added bonus of a décor shop tucked away for future investigation.

You can be walking along a busy shopping boulevard, peek between two buildings and be blown away by the view behind. Here is a lovely example of soft pearly grey, very sophisticated.

Wait awhile, pass back by and discover a completely different shade, an almost bluish grey. The contrast of these neutral greys against the soft creamy beige of freshly cleaned limestone give ideas as well ...

Here, Reims' cathedral tower with aging stone. Limestone is affected by many elements and the colors can vary tremendously. Weather, traffic, age, smoke ... all of these add to the depth of colors present. Some might consider this aging 'dirty', but if you look beyond that label to the palette of colors, you find beauty.

Nature here provides some examples as well, of the beautiful options for neutrals in your design with greys, browns, creams. Take this tree bark for example. I am dying to put together a beautiful 'commode' (dresser) or 'placard' (cabinet), incorporating this color combination.

Here in the far north of France, I reveled in the early winter's seaside climate in the village of Cayeux as another creative inspiration. The thousand subtle shades of grey found in the beach stones, the effect of the foggy day on the color and reflections in the water ... the curvy shapes of the inlet, all reminded me that these neutral colors can compete, in fact overcome, the standard eggshell or ivory we sometimes lean toward.

I am currently finishing up a redesign project of a small stone house or what we have called 'chalet', incorporating a dark grey, a grey called 'plume' and a blue grey called 'ciel' or sky. You'll see how it all came together in an upcoming edition.

This shabby chic bedroom with grey and soft brown patinas makes me want to snuggle up with a good book ... or walk barefoot on that plush textured carpet ... these neutrals are not boring!!

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Oiseau

We hope you're all managing well with the holiday madness. Thank you to everyone who came to our Holiday Bazaar last Friday, it was a blast! Thank you to all of the amazing vendors and artisans who made our first Bazaar such a success too!

This week's piece is so exciting because not only is it tres chic, but it's also just the tip of the iceberg when we say we can "customize any piece."

Johnelle painted the designs on this piece freehand, can you imagine?!

Oiseau is a classic vintage dresser with fun mixed vintage pulls that add to the playful feel of this piece.

While Oiseau has now found its home, it's a great example of customization of a piece as well as Johnelle's expertise, and it doesn't stop there! Johnelle can also do different styles, like this amazing graphic piece she did last summer.

The woman's creativity knows no bounds.

She also does murals!

As you can see, your imagination is your only inhibitor! Whatever you can imagine, Johnelle can help you come up with a design whether she paints it, designs the reupholstery, or builds a custom piece along with Brian Hill. The French Connection, Troisième Edition: Joyeux Noël!

or Merry Christmas ... all the same when you are in France!

We've been doing some holiday visiting and window shopping, getting in "l'esprit du moment"! From the tiniest village to bustling cities, signs of Christmas abound.

I am sorry you couldn't make it here to come along, but I've some pictures to share so armchair touring, here we go!

First stop Reims, (pronounced 'rance'), a gorgeous city east of Paris with prerequisite drop dead cathedral ... important to France's history as many, many kings were crowned there.

Reims is sprinkled with pretty plazas, shopping districts and restaurants... all connected by tramway...

They were putting on their annual March de Noël (Christmas Market) ...

a crêche scene with an empty manger ... the wise men await!

French patisseries (pastries), including beignets (like donuts but yummier), pomme d'amour (apple of love, delish), crepes and gaufres (thin pancakes and waffles) and of course, barbe de papa noël (cotton candy)

Rows of wooden cabins lined the main plaza and merriment seeking folks from all over walked the aisles to view their wares. This was a merry evening with crowds strolling around ... just enjoying the scenery.

It was a nice warm- up for our Paris visit. Come with me as I stroll down the Champs Elysées ...

We started at the Arc de Triomphe ...

went along with the crowds looking at all of the various building decorations and displays ... like this full sized sailing boat on the Groupama building ...

and the giant Chinese dragon ...

a Famous store with Famous french purses ... yes a WHOLE store dedicated to purses ... le sigh!

another pièce de resistance, the Louis Vuitton store ... with a cirque theme. Shades of pearly grey, orange and fuschia made an inspiring backdrop to balancing elephants and whimsical monkeys ... and trapeze artists, too! (don't try this at home, it is way too high!!)

can't wait to try this color combination on some furniture ... that will be a real color punch ... merçi monsieur vuitton !

after braving the crowds along the avenue, we braved the crowds on the peripherique for the ride home!

hope this short stroll gave you a taste of France's holiday action... I am sorting through my camera pics and may have a few more to pop in here, so check back later this week! so many colors and sights along the avenue to amp up my santa spirit!

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Azteca

With the holidays just around the corner it's only fitting that our Salvaged Chic Of The Week should be something that you'll want to immediately add to your wish list!

Meet "Azteca":

Are you in love yet? This gorgeous chair is one that Johnelle recently designed and is ready and waiting for a new home! Azteca is a vintage 60s style chair with a simple and classic design that allows the upholstery to really pop. The chair has been reupholstered with an amazing vintage textile with Aztec influences.

Johnelle added a luscious deep blue velvet to the seat and a linen brown to the back and band of the chair. The design is pulled together by the bright pop of red from the burlap piping.

The Aztec style is one that I find so gorgeous and is also being seen in fashion now. Interior design and fashion are constantly influencing each other. Here are some of my favorite fashion contributions to the Aztec look.

Whether you love this look so much that you want to incorporate it into your fashion as well, or you're happier to keep it as a conversation piece in your interior design, Azteca is the perfect piece to POP a neutral space, or to add to an overall eclectic style and feel that you may have.

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: Mid-Century Madness!

For this week's Salvaged Chic Of The Week we've got a fabulous pair of chairs we recently reupholstered for a client. These stunning mid-century chairs were clearly lookers, but you couldn't see their true potential until they were recovered.

Our client picked this Italian wool fabric, which is a great design that represents the mid-century style in a modern way. The fabric will wear well, and won't show stains easily either because of it's pattern and thickness. Great choice!

A pair of mid-century chairs like these will be the perfect focal point in any space, regardless of your style.

The key is to have a mix of furniture styles so that your room doesn't look like a time capsule, that's why the design of these chairs is so perfect, she's made them her own!

When our client brought the chairs in to reupholster, she wanted to breathe fresh life into them, while still keeping the integrity of their mid-century design. One modification that Johnelle and she decided on, was to add a center button design to the backs of the chairs. This is something that we can always do! Adding piping, buttons or tufting are all ways to make a worn out chair look new and sophisticated once again.

For extra detailing we added a herringbone fabric for the piping. Another alteration we made was to add curved zippers on the cushions so that they could be removed and dry cleaned when needed. As with all of our upholstery projects we always Scotch Guard them to prolong their new life and to keep them looking their best!

Chairs like these will also cost a little less to recover than a whole chair. A tip to keep in mind when debating whether to get a piece reupholstered or not is to know that you can save money when your project doesn't need to have the foam or stuffing replaced. If you're just getting covers made you'll save even more! Reupholstering a piece can sometimes seem daunting, but the transformations are so extreme and can really transform an entire space with your newly revamped pieces.

The French Connection ... deuxième note

Bonjour mes loulous!  OK it is the second note (deuxième note)from The French Connection from afar and why not have a little français for fun!

December is launched and winter is here in the north of France.  Leaves have pretty much fallen and muted tones are all around.  Some people find winter depressing, but for those of us who are always seeking design inspiration ... these shades of grey and taupe and soft earth colors bring new ideas for furniture palettes.  Next update I think I will share some photos of how all of these greys ... grays ... les gris ... have inspired a recent project.

But for now ... DECEMBER is here and that means just a few weeks until the Maison et Objet Home-Fashion Showcase for Spring/Summer 2012 Collection!  It is JANUARY 20-24 in Paris, well not in what I view REAL Paris but in one of those big convention centers not so far from Charles de Gaulle airport.

The names of the collections being presented have already whet my appetite for the coming visit:

The Gathering for Cultural Objects ... bringing cultural objects into the home
Rare Pieces and Unique Objects ... need they say more?

Each has their own design hall and these are not small rooms ... this event is enormous and for the uninitiated, it can be a bit overwhelming!  this show is attended by designers and retailers from all over Europe ... it is so fun to go and mingle, listening to the various languages and accents and observing how the attendees are dressed is inspiring in of itself!

That is what I go for mostly ... INSPIRATION! ... to see the latest trends in colors and styles ... to take tons of photographs and hopefully, find that one or two special vendor who might have something interesting and attainable for small and unique retailers like Mignonne Décor or The Bohemians.  Staying up-to-date helps us recreate new looks for our clients and bring the latest ideas for you to consider...incorporating them in a way that is uniquely you.  So whether it is discovering some really fun glassware that might end up as a new offering in our shops ....

So, there is a little teaser about what is to come in January! When I go, I squeeze in some sightseeing, treasure-hunting and off the beaten path snooping around ... picture will follow!

Salvaged Chic Of The Week-The Tiger's Eye

Welcome back to the latest Salvaged Chic Of The Week! We hope you've all recovered from your stuffing and pie food-comas. To help ease the bitter return to work after a long weekend, we'll infuse the end of your week with some glamour, Mignonne style! This week's Chic piece is a gorgeous 1940s waterfall vanity. Johnelle's masterful design of this piece keeps it's integrity, while adding a modern touch with the fun pop of color.

Isn't she stunning? Now tell the truth, do you look at a gorgeous piece like this and find yourself falling into a fantasy spiral envisioning scenes of yourself looking like this??

One of our all time favorite looks on top of vanities is the little vignette of your favorite lipsticks and jewels, so chic!

A vanity like this is perfect for a shared space too. It's feminine in its detailing and soft colors (enough so that you can still have your Harlow moments!), but also masculine with the rustic wood and hearty shape. We love the idea of a his and hers side to a vanity, think the above on the left and this men's selection on the right.

This is a classic art deco era piece, as with any piece that Johnelle designs she takes into account the condition of the piece before she paints it. The wood that was preserved the best were the inlay details. The pulls were also in impeccable condition and Johnelle created a look that pulls out the beautiful tiger's eye wood detailing and the color of the hardware.

If you want a mirror above the vanity you could pair it with a fun French inspired baroque mirror, or go for more of a juxtaposition by pairing this vintage vanity with a modern mirror.

Whatever way you style it, this piece is gorgeous and waiting for someone to appreciate its glam sensibilities and the warmth it will bring to any space. Stop in the shop and let the fantasies begin!

Salvaged Chic Of The Week: "Midnight Rain"

Welcome to our latest installation of Salvaged Chic Of The Week! We're so excited to introduce you to this gorgeous piece, I almost feel like just writing filler to draw out the anticipation...it's a good one! Okay, I'll make you suffer no longer, meet "Midnight Rain."

Isn't she a beaut? While we don't like to toot our own horns too much, this piece is just a stunner.

Johnelle Mancha designed this gorgeous down stuffed chair to be the perfect balance between comfort and style. While this particular piece is sold, it's an amazing piece for inspiration to create your own design or to have Johnelle create another one of a kind piece for you! This chair shows that you can actually have a chair that you can slump down in with your morning coffee one day and then present it as a conversation piece the next.

The inspiration for this piece came from our love of vibrant colors and eclectic designs.

The details of this piece are one of its greatest features. "Midnight Rain" is, of course, a vintage chair and we love its stylish curves and plush stuffing. The vibrant blue and yellow fabric is a fountain pattern (think more modern and stylish brocade) in royal velvet. The subtle checked back and band fabric is a raw silk, which is incredibly luxurious, but less fragile than a typical silk.

You know how people say, "You can't help who you fall in love with?" That's how I feel about the unique pieces that Johnelle creates. To me, one of the best parts about Mignonne is that you can create anything you want. You have your own personal designer (Johnelle) who can either assist with a design that you've been thinking up, or she can design a unique piece like "Midnight Rain" for you with her stash of vintage fabrics and her keen eye for incorporating new ones. Salvaged Chic Of The Week: "Kensington"

Hello Mignonettes! (I know that's technically a sauce or a genus of the herb family, but can that also be your new nicknames? I'll let you decide.) Welcome to our new weekly column: "Salvaged Chic Of The Week" where we showcase a new piece we've designed and tell you a little bit about its journey, influences and why we are in love!

"Salvaged Chic Of The Week" will highlight either a custom furniture redesign, or an upholstery project we've recently reinvented. Here you'll be able to learn about what makes a particular piece so special! We'll tell you a bit about their roots and how they've been reincarnated into modern conversation pieces. Through introducing you to these creations, you get to see how these salvaged pieces have gone from forgotten throw-aways, to chic works of art!

First up is "Kensington"

"Kensington" was a fusion design by Brian Hill and Johnelle Mancha. Brian created the top of this gorgeous table from rich, honey colored, hundred-year-old Doug Fir.

Being influenced by a love for parquet (see examples of some of our favorite antique parquet floors below), Brian reclaimed the Doug Fir from the floors of a home that was being demolished in Kensington. From it was born the design, and its name.

If you aren't aware, parquet flooring is one of the oldest styles of wood flooring. It was introduced to replace the marble flooring in Versailles that would constantly have to be cleaned. It was widely popular for centuries and virtually the only style before the 19th century, when the steel nail was invented and tongue & groove flooring was introduced.

If you don't happen to blessed with gorgeous hundred (or centuries) old parquet floors like these, "Kensington" can be the perfect way to bring the classic design into your home.

Because of the time and difficulty it took to lay parquet flooring, it was only seen in the most affluent homes. Thankfully Mignonne prides itself in offering budget-savvy pieces (like "Kensington") that are available in a wide range of price points!

You can see the same hard work and handmade brilliance that parquet floors have in this table that Brian and Johnelle created. Having a table like "Kensington" is a modern way to reference a style that is so rich with history. It's also a great way to highlight existing wood floors that you have. Married to a rustic curved metal base, "Kensington" fuses the masculinity of the patterned wood to the femininity of the vintage curved metal.

Telling A Story With Furniture...

One of the biggest forms of flattery is gaining the trust of a client, to the point that they hand me over a piece of furniture, and say "Do what you want, I trust you, I want to be surprised!". In this case the trust was gained from a lovely client, who is now a repeat. After coming into the shop and seeing a previous couch we had done and sold, she got to re thinking her own pieces, and how we could transform them! She dug into her own collection and pulled together textiles that had meaning to her in many ways...batiks from her travels to Africa while working as a nurse for HIV treatment. I don't take this task lightly, and quite honestly feel both a huge rush of excitement to have the freedom to play with colors, but also feel loads of lovely responsibility to execute to the fullest.

We started with a wingback chair she found on craigslist:

What can I say? Yes, hideous...but great bones to be transformed, and what more is that this is a way to keep the overall cost down in customizing a piece with us at Mignonne, don't invest too much on the piece to begin with! I was able to take this chair to a new level of pop! We pulled out a lovely rich blue batik, and honestly I had to know more about these textiles after seeing my clients collection. African Batiks are so earthy and beautiful in my opinion, and after reading a bit more about them I learned that the colors are made from a paste that is most often made from cassava (a root plant) flour, rice, alum or copper sulphate that is then boiled together to make a smooth thick paste. The paste is applied in two different ways. A lot of these batiks are made by using freehand drawing of traditional designs using a feather, thin stick, piece of fine bone or a metal or wooden comb-like tool, done by women which is then forced through a thin metal stencil with a flexible metal or wooden tool, enabling accurate repeat patterns...this is done by men.

And below is the transformation...

Next on our agenda was our clients couch, this piece was an absolute treasure to work on, and it was here that I was given more freedom to shine! Having completed her wingback, I was able to feel assured that my client truly wanted me to deliver a one of a kind piece. Check out the before shot of her couch...

Totally drab, and on it's last limbs, this piece was screaming for a makeover. We opted to change the design of the back cushions...yes, this is something we can easily do! Now the couch would have a more polished, and crisp feel.

I pulled complimentary earthy marigolds, soft black brown fabrics mixing petite corduroys, velvets, and the lovely pop orange piping.

The back of the couch, and pillow bands are patched together with batik, and all together this piece is truly something. It tells a story like no other for this client. Forget keeping her keepsake fabrics in a drawer...she now can enjoy them every day!

'The Cathedral'

Sometimes you find a piece that is just so different and unique that you just have to say wow! I picked this piece up from a friend who was liquidating, and oh my how we are in love. Already stunning, we cleaned her up and revived her with a new polished look. Her arched doors, and curved legs remind me of the churches in Florence, and Paris... she is almost like a little altar where you could keep your most special things.

With the holidays on our mind, we at Mignonne are stocking up on lots of vintage goodies, and pops of wonderful colors to help romanticise and liven up your home!

A piece like cathedral could be an amazing treasure to get for yourself or a loved one...red hearts galore.

Labor of Love

There are so many potential projects out there, and it can be so incredible to witness the transformations of them! This table and chair set is a perfect example. A lovely client of ours knew that her dining set had good bones, and could probably be transformed, but would this option be better than just buying a whole new set? In the end it really is a personal choice, but what we love to offer at Mignonne, is the option for clients to get involved! What does your dream set look and feel like? This is where we start.

In this case wipeable friendly, rustic modern, and a pop of animal instinct was on the table. We were ready to start working our magic while the loose ends fell into place.

A dated speckled table top finish and base was keeping this piece stuck in the late 60's, and not in a good way. It felt drabby, and needed to be rejuvenated.

Keeping in theme with a rustic modern vibe, we encouraged the client to let us unearth the dated finish, and unveil the lighter wood screaming to come out! With it's natural imperfections, it proved to be reborn!

We wanted to modernize the base, so a crisp white felt appropriate!

Fully extended, this beauty will be the center for many family occasions to come! I think that is one of the most gratifying things of this business to me! I love knowing that I literally get to transform pieces with my own two hands, and they then get to live on in the homes of families and be passed on :)

Moving on to the chairs, these were challenging! Because spraying furniture is not my approach ( I find that is cheapens the final feel, and doesn't have as much soul... ), I spent hours layering every little nook and cranny. The client fell in love with a magical, sparkled blue vinyl, and zebra fabric.

We added a silver brushed nailhead design to all the chairs, which again played up that modern twist! The vinyl is stylie, and easy to wipe clean.

Last on the agenda, the animal instinct was left for the head chairs!

Remedy Mini Loft Salon Makeover

Sometimes a mini makeover is all a space needs. When co owner Dani of Remedy Salon Emeryville approached us at Mignonne to assist with their upstairs loft expansion, we were floored! First off we wanted to get a sense of the project and how we could help. The salon was outgrowing their space, and an upstairs empty loft was screaming expansion!
Owner Dani wanted to create a more vintagey vibe that could co exist with their more open industrial store front, and we had just the touch to make it a reality. Being budget savvy was of importance so we were able to work in a number of ways to help keep things at an affordable range.

One: Antique Fair Buying Trip together, to scout for potentials that could be used in the expansion. One hour spent together we were able to find core pieces!

Like this amazing metal stand (and three others) that lead carpenter Brian Hill was able to transform! The metal base pulls the industrial look upstairs...

We were also able to find vintage window screens, and Mignonne then had custom mirrors made and were able to transform them!

Two: We explained to Dani that if she was to find several core pieces on her own, we could transform them and help keep cost down! So off she went, and picked up several pieces at Urban ore, and we worked our magic!

ode to the favorite rugs!

I sometimes dream of waking up at a far away flea market. My dream is hazy, and I am surrounded in a dusty land with treasures abound! Kind of like this...

I know often times it can be overwhelming to think of incorporating that new member to the family... the rug. It says so much, it takes up space, often times having it's own room...it's needless to say... a commitment! This core hotspot can add so much to a space, and doesn't always have to break the bank. Working with bright & bold colors in my furniture line, I want to show how they can play in a space smashingly!
so let's start with this ... i think it pretty much sets the stage for where I am going with my obsession for vintage rugs & textiles. ha!

I could stare at this photo of stacked rugs forever, print it out and frame it as art, i love the colors, the warmth, the history. I am always on the hunt for vintage fabrics...here is an example of one I transformed with a similar textile:

i love that rugs, books, and art can be the pop a space needs! This rug below says it all, and makes the space!

This pic below shows you that you can mix and match patterns, and still have a crisp fresh look! Many times when working with clients on the hunt for a rug the idea of one that has patterns or colors can be intimidating. When you break through that fear, beautiful things can happen. Of course too much of anything can be an over kill, but again, I love how this pic proves us wrong!

It's always exciting to get lost in the moment, a colorful dream, where you have no inhibitions, and life just flows! It is so ridiculous how ridiculous it can all just be sometimes (ha!), and so when I find myself in a bind to follow my gut on color & design... is this piece too bright? Can I dare to go there? Could we really build that? I am more and more inclined to take those risks, and realize why not? I can't bare the thought of loosing the fun of it all. So today's challenge is to look at the surroundings you are in, and ask...

Am I bold enough?

Do I take a stance?

It is surprising how color and art can play into our everyday moods, and that is why transforming these pieces makes me alive. Be bold, choose freely, and pass it on! And for those who need a little guidance and helping hand we are here at Mignonne to just so.

Playing with fabric

So you want to think outside of the box for your custom re-upholstery but not sure where to begin? Here are a few tips that will help you incorporate playfulness and whimsy

into your modern interior design.

1.) Go Retro! Often thriftier than more contemporary fabrics, you can really achieve a unique flair with this nostalgic alternative. You're not limited to digging through bins at your local thrift shop either, use an old blanket, curtains, that dress shoved in the back of the closet... really the sky is the limit.

2.) Think Local. We recently collaborated with local fabric designer Caroline Cecil on this lovely twosome, pairing a vintage chair with her pink hand silk screened cheetah print!

3.) Use patterns. Dots, stripes, chevrons or even your own custom patchwork! This sweet reupholstered arm chair even includes sentimental swatches of it's owners wedding veil in the patchwork, making it even more special!

4.) Last but not least... Make it POP! Inject some bright colors into your design. Yellows, pinks, chartreuse... A surprising flash of buttons or contrasting piping makes your new piece stand out.

Open your eyes to inspiration. Recognize pleasurable patterns in nature, colors that may be missing in your life or ones that bring you joy. Touch, feel, explore, appreciate those subtle details that make all the difference. Flip through magazines and start a look book. Snap photos when your vision is stimulated and translate that into your own expression!

Rustic Reclaimed Farm Tables Encore!

So I know we just did a post on farm tables by Brian Hill & Mignonne, but this piece just finished today is so amazingly cool that we couldn't resist sharing it...

A client of ours wanting to be budget savvy, came to us hoping that we could help accomplish a great blend of modern rustic & reclaimed. We went through a plethora of design options, looking at photos here and there for inspiration. Giving us the lead on final material choices, the pressure was off to come up with something truly unique! Salvaged reclaimed redwood, from an old Marin County water tank is the new table top. The base was painted in an eco white, which really makes the top pop!

Metal stools will probably be paired for the head the chairs, and quite possibly we will build a reclaimed bench to pair with the table! This table is a perfect example of how we can work with your specs to make a truly custom stand out piece for your home!

Since Mignonne opened in 2006, we have epitomized the meaning of Mignonne: ...small/petite for one, cute, and having a woman's touch- or the touch of women! We have been constantly challenged with our small space, and have spent many hours trying to create interesting vignettes in tight quarters. It has always been a great sense of pleasure to try to make successful layouts in tight quarters, and so now that we have more store space, we are feeling even that much more inspired and out of our minds with possibility!!

It's like a huge door has been opened, and we are having a party everyday! ha! But really, we feel so lucky, and excited for the future displays..

'Empire' Side Tables instantly transform a space...

Every now and then I find pieces that are so unique with quirky details that I am able to design around... in this case it was these sweet pair of mahogany side tables.

I was out and about on a mini vaca & buying trip with my other half and we spotted them. The brass details were jumping out and there was a design instantly in the making. It's like finding a diamond in the ruff, pitter patter of the heart as you spot that amazing find! I love pop colors done well as we know, and wanted to do an ode to the asian details of the pieces with out being obvious... so opted no on red, and yes on salmon!

These side tables have a shelf on the inside and a vintage power strip so that you can charge your phone, plug in a lamp, clock etc..Inside cubbies are revamped in a distressed cream. A space can instantly transformed with these lovlies. Next to a bed, or in a living room, a sophisticated pop! This color was mixed with love, and can be re used in a project for a piece you may own, and are now thinking about.

The Bohemian Settee

This lovely settee is the newest creation to hit the shop, and if I had a big enough boudoir she would have been coming home with me! This piece 'Rush' hits all eras, and marries all styles...wrapped up in luscious textures and colors. The body is a royal blue velveteen, with grassy linen piping, and framboise Ikat splashes. Custom boudoir, matching circular pillow adds just the right accent. I want theses pieces to last, to be usable, to be something not just for show, and what better way than to wrap the body in a velvet that only becomes more romantic with time!

But beyond the fabrics there is the gem of the antique frame itself. It's spindle details, and original casters date the piece to the 1910's/20's. It's been stabilized and reinforced to last another hundred years. She measures 51" long, 2ft wide, 30" tall (back), so she is petite, another feature hard to find in a settee.

So for all the ladies who have swooned over having that perfect boudoir piece, remember we can help you to achieve it...

Painterly Pillows that make a mark...

I am obsessed with these new pillows I just designed and got in... Who says art has to be hung on a wall?? But seriously, these overstuffed accent pillows are my favorite and latest creation. They are down filled, and have custom zippers. Reverse matte denim backs, with canvas paint splattered fronts, pop orange piping...

I love how these pillows can make a space, a simple couch can be transformed to have that bit of artistic flare/conversation. They are the first of my limited series. Available now and can also ship these little gems...xoxo

All Dressed Up...

I love mixing and matching things as you'll see in the shop! I am a big believer that anything can go in design, as long as it is put together with intention... a little bit of this and that can be just the things that make your space inviting & exciting. I picked up these two different shaped tables, and wanted to create a bedside set that could live together. I started playing around with their finish.. as I often do with my pieces, never quite sure what they'll become, and they quickly became a darling his and her 'tuxedo' set. The painterly finish makes them not so obvious, and wanted them to read more as a canvas.. Staged with a bit of pop color here and there with books, lamps and jewelry, this set is sure to shine. xx

Matmi Ikat Chair is pure love....

When i picked up this little 60's chair, I was in love with the shape, size and possibility! It had the perfect masculine silhouette, one of the many things I love about these mid century pieces, but it also screamed take a risk...and spice it up. I love the look and feel of raw silks, but also want my chairs to be pieces you can cozy up in with out all the fuss. I picked up a small amount of this green, vintage Thai Ikat fabric, also known as Matmi, and knew I could use it somehow as an accent in a chair. The black & white raw silk blend used in the seat has the durability that I love for daily use, and the Ikat has just the right amount of sophisticated color to shine. The little decorative reversable pillow pulls her all together.

The Matmi Ikat technique is also extremely fascinating and is very labor-intensive! From what I've read it requires great skill because the yarn has a tie-dye technique that happens before it is all weaved. I am so drawn to these bright, bold patterns, that feel timeless, organic, and vibrant. Email us at quotes@mignonnedecor.com, for a free review of a piece you are thinking of transforming! Mignonne's First in a Series

Just letting you know our first Upholstery Workshop was a blast!!! Tons of great fabrics to choose from, fun pieces redesigned to give them a new lease on life, free help with putting it all together. Oh and did we mention the mimosas and fromage ??EVERYTHING is better with mimosas and fromage!!

Mignonne's Free Upholstery Workshops will be a recurring event, taking place approximately every 6 weeks. Here's how they work:

1. To reserve your spot, you will provide us with a photo of your project piece (chair, ottoman, or the like) and a $25 non-refundable deposit, credited toward the cost of your finished piece.

2. Upon receipt, we review your proposed project and provide you with your estimate of project completion. Factors that will influence your cost include size of the piece, are you providing the fabric or are we, etc.

3. On the day of the event, you will receive free personal design assistance from Johnelle and her team. She will discuss your vision with you, review and select fabrics with you (if needed), advise on fabric placement, materials to be used (down or foam, as an example) and create your order with you. You will provide a 50% deposit of the total cost and, in usually 2 weeks, your new and amazing furniture piece will be completed and ready to pick-up with final payment. We also have delivery options, if that is required.

How you benefit:

**By participating in the workshop, you will enjoy free consultation and fabric scouting for your project (normally a service we charge for).

**Get inspired from our wide array of vintage and new fabrics, design books and prior Mignonne projects to review and select from.

**Don't forget the mimosas and fromage. ha!

Alameda Flea !!!! Wheeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

well we're just coming off of an amazing week-end at the Alameda Antique Fair (more commonly known as the Alameda Flea). We are avid participants ... when the weather is fair. The past few months it has not been so. Rain and inclement weather has kept us away ... our wares (painted and upholstered furniture, cool vintage décor items) do not fare well in such climes ...

So when we found out the forecast was for fine and fair weather all the week-end long, we ramped up!!! we arrived with an amazing collection of freshly prepared furniture ... hot colored chests of drawers, farm tables, exotic vanities, upholstered chairs, art piece settees, well you name it, we had it!

Heavy emphasis on HAD!!! the rest of the SF Bay area 'tique picking population must have heard as well because they arrived in HORDES!!!! and it was hot! real hot!!

It was like a rock concert. seriously! the rows and rows of cars were endless!! the entry line snaked like Mick was on the ticket!

and there were not only double the attendees, but it seemed like the vendor population had grown as well.

We nearly sold out, which made for a much easier return ... here's hoping for the same weather next month, and also to see you there so you don't miss out!

The fair is the first Sunday of each month, takes place at the old Naval Air Station. à la prochaine!!

the last church pew we found and transformed was so popular ... we snagged this one in a heartbeat. You can make a dramatic statement by incorporating a piece like a pew into your room design. Mignonne now has the most amazing pillows in store ... for some time now, Johnelle has been collecting vintage textiles during her travels and scouting ventures ... and now we have partnered with a great artisan to transform these textiles into beautifully designed pillows and cushions for your home.

These are well-crafted, handmade accessories for any room ... they are functional, too! They've been designed with zippers to remove and clean the covers, the pillow interiors are down.

Definitely worth checking out the next time you stop in!

Mignonne is continuing our chair design partnership with textile artist Gina Perincini of Flock. In addition to our line of custom dining chairs, customer can now select occasional chairs for purchase ... or bring in one for custom design treatment.

Here's an example of what you can select. This vintage Federal armchair, circa 1940s has been covered with flax colored linen featuring an avocado green hand-screened fern print. Notice the quality details such as crosshatched offsetting fabric utilized on the cushion piping chair back.

So here we have an eco-friendly option (one less item in the landfill!), repurposed by local artisans (yay!), uniquely beautiful (won't be seeing the same furnishings at your friend's house) and waiting to find a home!

Decanters and digestifs and more will soon be arriving! this pic is a taste ... adorable amber petite glasses ... perfect for a small aperitif or after dinner digestif. They have a charming emblem of a French couple, courting! ooh la la!

our store assistant, Rebekah Carey McNall, is doing a "stage" (stahj, fr.) ...which is somewhat akin to a work exchange program with our sister store, The Bohemians in Brantôme, France (the southwest region). This will likely be a program we introduce more formally each year.

As part of the program Rebekah structured and proposed, she will be designing four distinctly different window displays while in France. The shop has very unique, hand-forged windows lining the front of the store...these are about 8" panes of glass that are 6' or so tall. There are two dozen of these ... many of which are the original old wavy glass ... lovely to behold and they fill the space with beautiful morning light.

For her first installation, Rebekah chose a bird theme.. (knowing proprietaire Kim Mancha's love for all things oiseau!)...she wanted to arrive prepared to complete a window 'toutes-de-suite' and the ethereal, tissue-light birds that she pre-cut and tucked into here valise were just the ticket.

The birds flock around openings left in each window ... creating a spotlight effect on the mannequins posed in each window.

We think the result is very pretty and very, very 'printemps'! do you agree?

Rebekah Carey McNall is completing an internship in France at our sister store, The Bohemians. While there, she is scouting french treasures to bring back for Mignonne ... as well as completing window designs, interior merchandising schemes and general sightseeing and vagabondry!

We're stealing some shots to whet your appetite for all of the sweet things to come in July.

Here is an adorable porcelain coffee or tea set from Limoges ... 4 cups, saucers, sugar and creamer and tiny spoons ... depicted are a courtier romancing a young miss with his mandolin ... a charming country scene. Delicious and soon to be seen in our Berkeley shop!

Just finished our first commercial space redesign and what a whirlwind experience it was! We transformed the interior of Ketér Salon, located on Berkeley's fabulous Fourth Street ... gorgeous new wall treatments & painting, hand-milled parquet floors, new lighting and update fixtures throughout...

Today I was perusing an article in Elle Décor, Blogs We Love and was led to stylebeat.blogspot.com and a feature on Kendall Wilkinson Design & Home in San Francisco.

There I found this luscious photo featuring an inviting spot to rest, sip a cup of tea, peruse Elle Décor ... etcetera, etcetera ... all those things I, as a young mom of 2 rambunctious kids, used to dream of doing on a white chair and ottoman in a peaceful alcove in my cottage by the sea ... or the vineyards ... or the city lights!

Yes, someday I would be tasteful and elegant and thoughtfully understated. When visitors would pop in unexpectedly ... I would fling my door wide so they could glimpse the vignettes of wonder carefully sprinkled throughout my abode.

heh heh.

Flash forward to 2010. Two adult kids off on their own. Instead, we've dogs and garden projects and sanding dust and unfinished rooms and coco the cat ... and still no white chairs of respite to take me away.

We adore vintage glassware at Mignonne ... we are constantly "on the hunt" for interesting pieces, both in California and in France.

Vintage glassware definitely adds character and pizzazz to your table settings and can also be repurposed in interesting ways to bring charm to your décor.

Glasses can make lovely vases ... or when paired together you can create unusual centerpieces when entertaining. Take these vintage brandy snifters, for example. One would make a pretty vase ... line the four down the center of a rectangular table and float one beautiful flower (poppy, small rose, magnolia) in each to make a statement.

You can choose from an array of custom colors AND handscreened fabric for the seats. Johnelle partners with Gina Perincini to create your one-of-a-kind dining chairs (sets of at least four). We can scout the chairs for you or you can provide your own. The selection of styles are diverse and can be customized to fit your décor.

I just loved the 'trés moderne' hot pink juxtaposed on the classic bombé chest. I spotted it at January's Maison et Objét design fair in Paris and was inspired. No, transported in fact! I even risked a stealth snapshot so I could share ...

The bombé chest originated during the French Regency period (early 1700s). With the death of Louix XIV, french furniture-makers were a tad more adventurous and went beyond the classical styles popular with the King. They experimented a bit ... styles and shapes changed, rounded and relaxed. It was during this time that the bombé chest was 'à la mode'! Also during this premier episode of popularity, the shape was combined with chinoiserie decoration and lacquers. As the experimentation continued, the chests became more and more ornate with intricate decorations featuring birds and animals, as well as flowers.

By the time Louis XV achieved the throne, the curvy bureaux were very popular. Because the mistress of Louis XV, Madame Pompadour, adored the bombé style ... it quickly became the 'bomb' (lol) of the mid-1700s.

Nowadays, you can really make a statement with a bombé chest by selecting an unexpected pop of color and shine.

Jut in time for spring vacation and summer break! when I see this, I can almost feel sunshine on the sidewalk ... imagine chalk hopscotch ... hear the click click whoosh of the sprinklers ... and smell the backyard BBQ... all those classic neighborhood signs of family time.

Johnelle used some TLC to give this baby another lease on life ... she's all ready to befriend the next kid in her future ... and spend summers (and spring and fall and week-ends and ...) sparking the imagination of a lucky someone who gets to host her for a spell...
